About UL

The University of Limerick (UL) was established in 1972 and stands as an independent, internationally focused university with a proud record of innovation in education and excellence in research and scholarship. It is a young, energetic, and enterprising university located on the west coast of Ireland along the picturesque River Shannon in Limerick, enjoying an unspoiled natural environment blended with state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities on its award-winning campus. Founded as the National Institute for Higher Education, UL earned full university status in 1989 and has grown into one of Ireland's most vibrant and innovative universities. Today, UL is home to over 18,000 students, including more than 3,300 internationally mobile students each year, and approximately 2,000 staff members. The university offers more than 70 undergraduate programmes and over 100 taught postgraduate programmes across Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; Education and Health Sciences; Science and Engineering; and the Kemmy Business School. UL has many market-leading programmes, including its BA Arts degree and Bachelor of Business Studies which are amongst the largest in Ireland.

The university is increasingly recognized for its research efforts, hosting some of the most innovative and successful research centres in Ireland, and excels at translational research aimed at accelerating the practical application of academic knowledge to benefit society. UL collaborates with 1,928 research organisations in 107 countries and pioneered the concept of Cooperative Education in Ireland, placing over 2,000 students in paid work placements annually across a network of 1,700+ employers spanning 25 countries. The University of Limerick is recognised as possessing one of the most spectacular third-level campuses in the world, known as "Ireland's Sporting Campus", featuring Ireland's first Olympic-size swimming pool, an indoor sports arena, Ireland's first altitude training centre, the 1,100-seat University Concert Hall, and the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance. A survey of Irish students recently voted UL as Ireland's most popular university with an 85% satisfaction rating, and 97% of UL graduates are in employment — 15% higher than the national average.
