Technological University of the Shannon Technological University of the Shannon (TUS), officially known as Technological University Shannon: Midlands Midwest, has a history that stretches back decades, rooted in the establishment of its predecessor institutions. The Royal School at Cavan was established in 1612, and the Athlone Institute of Technology was established in 1970, while the Limerick Institute of Technology traces its origins to the Limerick School of Art and Design, founded in 1852. These institutions formed the foundation for what would eventually become Ireland's newest technological university. Today, TUS stands as one of the leading public technological universities in Ireland. As Ireland's fourth technological university, it is also one of the largest higher education institutions in the Midlands and Midwest regions. The university has more than 13,000 students and over 1,500 staff members spread across multiple campuses located in Athlone, Limerick, and Clare. TUS was officially formed on October 1, 2021, through the merging of Athlone Institute of Technology and Limerick Institute of Technology, after more than several years of collaborative work between these institutions.
